Southern Garden Symposium Starts on October 26, 2007

The Southern Garden Symposium is pleased to announce its speakers for the 2007 Symposium scheduled for Friday and Saturday, October 26 and 27, in St. Francisville, Louisiana. This year’s program will be the 19th annual meeting that attracts garden enthusiasts from across the South.

The symposium will begin with a series of workshops on Friday, October 26. Attendees may select two of the following:

· Creating Interior Focal Points through Floral Design – Dr. James DelPrince, Associate Professor of Floral Design at Mississippi State University
· Pruning for Plant Health Care – Martha Hill, Department Chair of Landscape Management Technology at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi
· 21st Century Gardening: Plants, Products, and Practices – Nellie Neal, “The Garden Mama” to her radio and newspaper fans, from Jackson, Mississippi
· Timeless Tips for Fool Proof Landscapes – Mary Palmer and Hugh Dargan, principals in the Atlanta-based firm of Dargan Landscape Architects, whose award-winning projects have appeared in hundreds of national publications

The $60 cost per person for the Friday workshops includes lunch at Afton Villa Gardens.

On Friday evening, the speakers will be honored at a special gala at Live Oak Plantation. This cocktail buffet is open to all Symposium participants and their guests, $35 per person.

Saturday lecture programs will take place at the beautiful setting of Hemingbough in St. Francisville. The program will include:

· Hot New Flowers and Captivating Combinations - Norman Winter, Mississippi State University Extension Horticulturist and gulf coast TV, radio, and newspaper garden personality
· Furnishings for the Garden: 1750 - 1900 - H. Parrot Bacot, former curator/director of the Louisiana State University Museum of Art
· Garden Design Inspirations: Seeing Art Design Elements in Nature and Applying them to Southern Garden Designs - Edward C. Martin, co-organizer of the Landscape Architecture program at Mississippi State University and award-winning author of books on plants in design, now residing in North Carolina

The day will conclude with afternoon tea at Nydrie Plantation. The $60 cost per person for the Saturday symposium includes all lectures, lunch at Hemingbough, and tea at Nydrie.

The Southern Garden Symposium welcomes groups and individuals who wish to travel to St. Francisville for this special event.
