Message from the President

There are several important issues and projects to West Feliciana and I want to bring three in particular to your attention. On this Saturday, May 3rd an important election occurs this weekend as we will be casting our votes for races for the 6th Congressional District. This is the district that covers Baton Rouge and the surrounding Old South plantation country, including West Feliciana Parish. Please remember to head to the polls on Saturday!

There are two significant projects that have been in the works for quite some time and both of them could potentially have a significant impact on the town of St. Francisville and the parish. Generating additional tourists, diversifying tax revenue and increasing the quality of life are extremely important to the vitality of the parish. The two projects are the Tunica Hills Interpretative Center and the Julius Freyhan School Project.
Eco-tourism is the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry and the Tunica Hills Interpretative Center would be a shining example of our unique landscape for the world to see. This project has twice been fully funded by the legislature, only to later have the funds removed and earmarked for other higher-priority projects. Please take a few minutes and go to the chamber's web site to see the architectural renderings of this amazing and ambitious project .
The Julius Freyhan School project will be a multi use complex and will include the Temple Sinai which will house the only Jewish Museum in the state. It will serve as a much needed cultural and conference center. This will be the only complex of its kind in either East or West Feliciana Parish. The foundation envisions its use for plays, art exhibits, lectures, concerts and other cultural affairs and community gatherings.
Whether or not you personally support these projects, it is good for us all to be informed citizens of our parish and its potential projects. Please see the chambers web site for more details.

Last Word

The Police Jury is reviewing the tax structure in West Feliciana and will be discussing this at the next meeting. Keeping up with where we, as a community are going , is every citizens responsibility. We have some extraordinary talent at the Jury, that is looking at how to fund government in the near future. Look for more on this important subject and let your voice be heard for the pros and the cons. We applaud the planning that is implied in this discussion. We await to see what is proposed.

Greetings! May 12, 2008

We add our congratulations to US Congressman Don Cazayoux! Congressman Cazayoux represented a portion of West Feliciana in the past as a State Representative, but now in Washington, will represent us all.
